  • New Show Rule Alert
    With the new show season there is going to be a major change in clerking and master clerking. Cats that obtain their 6th winners ribbon Saturday of a two day show, will be able to transfer them before the show ends on Saturday to Champion to be shown as a Champion on Sunday.

    Here are the pertinent show rules as changed for next season:

    1.04.1 A BENCHED CHAMPION or PREMIER is one that is present and qualified for competition and judged in one ring as a Champion or Premier. Cats transferred to Championship or Premiership on the first day of a two day show will be counted as a Champion or premier in all rings. Such cat is presumed to be benched and present for competition throughout the entire show. Any cat competing in a ring, including a disqualified cat, is considered a benched cat for Grand Championship and Grand Premiership scoring purposes.

    1.19 c. The CHAMPION CLASS is for cats that have completed Championships in this Association, and for which the required Championship claim form and fee has been mailed to the Central Office or filed with the show Master Clerk by the end of class judging on the first day of a two day show.

    8.05 a. A Championship or Premiership Claim can be made by completing the official CFA Championship Claim Form and mailing to the Central Office before the opening day of the next show in which the cat is benched, or filing with the show Master Clerk by the end of the first day of a two day show. The CFA Championship Claim form must include the following information on the shows where Winners Ribbons have been won: show name, show date, and judges who awarded each Winners Ribbon and be accompanied by the appropriate fee. The confirmation fee is $10.00. The fee for certificates for framing is an additional $10.
    b. Cats completing the requirements for the Championship or Premiership class by the end of class judging on the first day of a two day show may file the Championship Claim Form and fee with the Master Clerk for inclusion in the show records package for CFA. Such cats will be eligible for competition as a Champion or Premier on the second day of the show. Champion or Premier transfers must be given to the Master Clerk by the end of class judging on the first day of a two day show.
    c. The Master Clerk will record all transfers filed by the end of the first day of the show on an absentee/transfer sheet designed for this purpose.
    d. The Show Secretary will report these transfers to the ring clerks prior to the start of judging on the second day of the show.
    e. All second day wins for any cats transferred to Championship or Premiership in error on the first day of a show will be voided. [posted 4/26/01]
  • NEW CA Legislative Fund Established
    From Lorna Malinen

    The Northwest Region has to be proud of the Crow Canyon Cat Club. On April 7th & 8th, they raised $1,000 that has been ear marked for the California legislative needs in the future.

    I have asked George James to set up a separate account as the money is to be used for the needs of California. At the same time I asked Jean Grimm to over see the management of the money. She'll be sending George the necessary receipt's for those who need to be paid, for printing materials, etc.

    The reason I asked Jean, she's a member of Crow Canyon Cat Club, and can keep the club up to date as to where their money is being spent.

    Again, to the member of Crow Canyon Cat Club, a BIG THANK YOU!

    Bobbi Irie, with her cat toys has been able to raise about $600, this money can be used wherever the need comes up.

    The following is how the account was set up with the thanks of Joan Miller;

    Jean;

    I really appreciate the successful fund raising effort at the Crow Canyon show and am glad to know there is now a fund of $1,100 designated for California legislative problems. There were some expenses for the senators' packages and printing of flyers for California SB 236 which I will forward today and there will be Bill Talbert's costs for copying/mailing the letters written at the show. This should leave approximately $1000.

    In my opinion it would be a good idea to have the $1000 gathering dust (as well as some interest) and build on it because I foresee more serious legislative problems to come in California this year and next. There is no amount in the CFA Legislative budget for out of pocket cat fancier/regional expenses so we have to rely on the various Regional funds to help with printing and other costs. The Southwest Region has about $3000 in their fund I believe and Florida has approximately the same with a little additional in the Southern Region fund. The following will give you an idea of how legislative regional funds have been spent in the past, which is a guide for possible future needs in California.

    1. Whenever there is a serious local ordinance and we mobilize grass roots opposition there are out of pocket expenses, usually for flyers. Berkeley was an example of direct lobbying of each Council member. It cost $240 to make up the 15 ring binders for all council members and media (binders, printing, tab sheets, color copying), which was covered by the Northwest Region. The expenses for the San Bernardino binders and Los Angeles binders were covered by the Southwest Region fund. The Richmond, Virginia binders were reimbursed by the Southern Region fund.
    2. On the state level the costs for flyers for a statewide bill for shows in Northern Calif. and Southern Calif. will usually run about $100 or more, plus mailing to California clubs (100) if necessary. We often provide flyers for TICA and ACFA and the dog fancy as well. Flyers prepared for SB 236 that were passed out to cat/dog fanciers at the Pet Fair in Anaheim and the mailing costs for letters written by fanciers were covered by the Southwest Legislative fund. They also reimbursed for the flyers passed out at the Revelers show. It all paid off very well helping to get SB 236 pulled.
    3. In March 200l The CFA Legislative Group and the Florida Legislative Committee co-sponsored a successful 4 hour workshop with guest speakers and panels on Friday before a show. There were expenses for Anna Sadler and me (I judged the show reducing cost) as speakers. The total budget, including airfares, hotel, meals, audio/visual, refreshments, printing of program and handouts, video taping costs, etc. was approximately $3,000. The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) paid over $600 to cover the travel/hotel/meal expenses of Mike Maddox, Attorney, another speaker. The Committee requested and received matching funds of $1000 from the Sy Howard Legislative Fund. The rest was raised at shows and through a $5 suggested minimum donation per attendee. If needed the balance will come from the Florida Legislative Fund, but we hope the workshop actually contributed to the fund. I do not yet have the final accounting. It is very possible that such a workshop could be beneficial in California if we are faced with the same statewide facility licensing that is proposed in Florida or another highly detrimental bill.
    4. Professional lobbyists are very expensive ($25,000 or so for one bill). The CFA Sy Howard Legislative Fund can match money raised in regions for special lobbying, as we did for Atlanta, Georgia, several years ago. The dog fancy raised $10,000, the cat clubs raised $5,000 and this was matched by the Sy Howard Fund. California Federation of Dog Clubs has had a professional in the past and there may be a time when we would benefit by joining them and contributing to the cost so that cat fancy interests would be better addressed at the state capitol.
    I hope this gives you an idea of how important it is to have some regional funds available when the time comes, in addition to continued donations to the Sy Howard Legislative Fund. California is a key state for CFA. Whatever is passed here will be picked up throughout the country. Let me know if you or other club members have any questions. Again, many thanks to the club for raising the money and for your interest in the legislative efforts.

    Joan Miller
    Chair, CFA Legislative Committee
