Santa Clara County Pet Population Study

Some of you may recall National Pet Alliance, along with CFA, Tails and No Tales Cat Club, Tri County Cat Club, White Glove Society and Crow Canyon Cat Club, sponsored a 1000 household random study of pets and stray cats in Santa Clara County in 1993. This landmark study was instrumental in allowing us to prove stray and feral cats were "the problem" in the issue of too many cats and kittens entering the shelter. As a result, spay/neuter voucher programs were developed for City of San Jose and Santa Clara County which have reduced our county cats entering the shelters tremendously.

Now is the time to find out how the pet demographics have changed over the past 10 years. Our study is now dated. Changes in animal control for San Jose, and continued interest by the Humane Society encouraging the surrounding cities to adopt the voucher program are in the works. We need to know what the current issue in pet demographics is for this county, how things have changed as a result of spay/neuter programs. We need to show the world that spay/neuter programs work, rather than punitive laws directed at owned cats and dogs.

To this end, National Pet Alliance, in conjunction with UC Davis, is proposing to do a follow-up study using the same type of questionnaire as the 1993 study. We will expand the stray cat questions to find out more about what happens to litters born in back yards. Our goal is to compare then and now, and what has happened to pet populations, how they are now acquired, etc., now that there are many fewer strays.

The cost to do the study is roughly $16,000. We have received commitments from CFA to match any funds which we raise toward the study, and another commitment from UC Davis to match again the matched funds from CFA. So basically, we need to raise $4,000., which will be turned into $8,000 from CFA, and then into $16,000 from UC Davis. Dr. Phil Kass at Davis will do the actual write up of the study. Our intention is to get it published in a scientific journal.

The City of San Jose, and the County of Santa Clara have been asked to donate $1000 each for this project. It looks likely that we will receive it, despite the current budget crisis. So, we are down to only needing to raise $2000, toward this $16,000 study, and are looking to you for a donation, any donation, which will help fund this study.

Please help. Donations can be made to:
